One of my favorite poets, Jajalluddin Rumi, was a 13th century Persian poet and Sufi mystic. Rumi believed passionately in music, poetry and dance as a way of reaching the Divine. The poem below is one of my favorites from his vast collection of poems.
It expresses the human journey, its unknown paths and its myriad challenges in being aware and awake.
"This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture;
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight."
In Peace,
Asha
